At first glance, many people scratch their heads when they watch this unusual winter sport. But the level of precision and strategic thinking required to win has led Curling to be referred to as "chess on ice." Played on a rectangular ice sheet by two teams of four players each, the object of the game is to push heavy polished granite stones towards a target area. Points are scored by getting more stones closer to the center of the target than the competing team. Once a rock is delivered, two players follow the stone and sweep its path so it will travel farther and straighter. Pressure from the sweeping causes the ice to melt slightly and helps direct the stone.
