Skeleton
While some say the name “skeleton” comes from the German word schlitten (sleigh), perhaps it is called that because the ride nearly scares people to death. Imagine zipping along a serpentine ice track on a one-person sled in a belly-down, head-first position at speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour! No wonder this exciting sport continues to grow in popularity, returning to the Olympics in 2002 after a 54 year absence.
